Chapter Five

Evander

The next few days after Callie’s punishment and thorough fucking were quiet and uneventful. She’d been tired, sore, and a little withdrawn despite the long aftercare session.

Her daylight hours—and a few too many night ones—were consumed by work, her fingers flying over the keyboard of her laptop as she wrote whatever story her clever brain conjured up—and Elias confirmed she was actually writing, not just going through the motions in an effort to hide herself away.

Because Evander was just as mired down in his own work—dealing with not only the paperwork for the new property, but several ongoing issues with a couple of other projects—he was reliant on Eli keeping a watchful eye on their girl.

They’d never actively pursued a relationship with a woman this way. Balanced a life around one. There was a lot of difference between a threesome for a night, and building a family.

But, construction was his game, and he was at the top of his league.

The key to success was choosing the initial development site wisely—were there any underlying faults; was there room for expansion and growth?

With Callie, there were faults, but the same could be said for both he and Eli. They were only human, after all, and no one was perfect.

The question was, would their combined flaws be canceled out by each other or amplified as time went by?

Evander believed, strongly, that their bond would only solidify the longer they were together. Those flaws and faults would diminish or simply become woven into the tapestry of their lives.

As for growth… yes, there was a great deal of potential in all of them for that.

“Evander.” Eli rapped a knuckle on the door.

His head came up and his eyes, which had been staring blindly at the laptop screen in front of him, blinked to clear his vision. “I’m awake.”

“Yeah, looks like it,” his friend said dryly. “Burning the candle at too many ends?”

“Just thinking.”

“Hmmm, sounds dangerous.”

“Not really.” He ran his hand over his face. “Everything okay? Did you need me for something or—”

“It’s seven-thirty,” Eli informed him, as though that should mean something.

Evander gave him a blank stare.

“Christ, you’re as bad as the minx. Seven-thirty, Wednesday, any of that ring a bell?”

Nope, not a one. He was more perplexed as to how it was Wednesday already. He swore it felt like Monday.

Elias sighed. “How you coped without me, I’ll never know. Our bags are packed and heading downstairs with the bellman. I suggest we follow them if we want to take off at our allotted time.”

“You’re sure it’s Wednesday?”

“It was this morning when I reminded you we were flying to Phoenix tonight. And again at lunch, when I asked if there was anything you required packing in your cabin bag.”

Oh hell, he only had the barest recollection of those conversations. He’d really gotten sucked into his work today. “Fuck, sorry.”

“Problems?”

“Nothing I can fix tonight.” He shut the laptop with a snap. “Did the doctor prescribe what we asked for?”

“She did. I explained Callie’s difficulties in detail, and she agreed that this is the sensible course of action.
